ZetaQuest® Damping Products

Piping and structure vibration is a common problem in many industrial facilities that can be very challenging to address. Many piping vibration problems are caused by resonance, where the mass and stiffness lead to natural frequencies that amplify vibration.  The frequencies can be shifted by changing the mass or stiffness, however, the amplification can only be reduced by increasing damping.

To meet this challenge, ZetaQuest® provides two product lines that provide increased damping to mechanical systems like piping and structures.  By adding sufficient damping, the problematic amplification is reduced to low enough levels that natural frequencies are no longer relevant.

ZetaQuest® Starr Damper

The ZetaQuest® Starr Damper functions as a dashpot as commonly described in mechanical systems.  The dashpot is the damping source for the system with the damping given by the character C. Most commonly identified with mechanical system, the damping level is described as a percentage of critical damping using the symbol ζ (Zeta), where a level of ζ  = 50% critical damping will produce no amplification at the resonant frequency and result in the resonance not being observed. Therefore, if ZetaQuest® Starr Dampers can be added to a mechanical system, the vibration when operating near the resonance can be dramatically reduced.

ZetaQuest® Rohr Damper

The ZetaQuest® Rohr Damper is a bolt on device to add damping to small bore piping.  The most common vibration related pipe failures are small bore piping suffering from high cycle fatigue, often due to amplification from resonance.  Installing ZetaQuest® Rohr dampers at high vibration locations, increases the system damping and reduces the amplification from resonance.  For most small bore piping, if you reduce the amplification from resonance you practically eliminate the risk of small bore vibration failures. The ZetaQuest® Rohr Damper is a great solution to vibration of:
  • Vent and drain connections
  • Instrumentation
  • Bypass lines around control valves
  • Pump seal or balance lines
